In 1912, he moved to Paris to perfect his art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under the guidance of Antonin Mercie and Jean Boucher. Chiparus is best known for his bronze and ivory sculptures, known as chryselephantines, depicting exotic dancers, mounted on pedestals of ribboned onyx or portor marble. Chiparus exhibited at the Salon in 1914, where he was awarded an honourable medal. He opened his own studio after the war and exhibited regularly at the salons. Most of his works were produced between 1914 and 1933. In the 1920s, Demetre Chiparus drew inspiration for his sculptures from excavations in Egypt, particularly the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb. His work was also inspired by Russian ballets and French theatre.)
