Africa - Gabon - Carved wooden Lumbo/Lumbu amulet depicting maternity, woman carrying her womb, raffia necklace, first half 20th century. Lumbo amulets measure between 10 and 20 centimeters in height and belong to diviner-healers (nganga). They most often represent women, but sometimes men as well. Some figures are shown standing, although most are seated or kneeling. Worn on the arms, neck or even waist, these amulets were protective against all forms of ailment.
