Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - Rare autochrome on Lumière plate - Lot 7
Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - Rare autochrome on Lumière plate produced in 1912, signed "Herlant", 12 x 9 cm. This precious portrait shows the photographer himself, captured in the intimacy of his refined interior. The scene is beautifully composed: the walls are adorned with kilim carpets in shimmering patterns, evoking a pronounced taste for Orientalism. Shelves and consoles display delicate old Brussels earthenware attributed to Bombaerts, while several pieces of Chinese porcelain testify to his interest in Far Eastern art. The ensemble is harmoniously completed by an imposing piece of Louis XV-style Liège oak furniture, a rare example of regional furniture from the period. A masterpiece of early color photography, this interior autochrome is distinguished as much by its technical quality as by the decorative richness of its subject. Léon Herlant (1873-1968), a man who was both a scientist and an artist. A doctor of medicine and pharmacology, professor and chairman of the Faculty of Medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1930 onwards, Herlant was a perfect example of the spirit of his time: curious, methodical and sensitive to the beauty of the world. In addition to his scientific work - including a book co-written with G. Billen in 1896, Micrographie des poudres officinales - Léon Herlant was a passionate Autochrome photographer. His photographs reveal an intimate view of nature and everyday objects. His works include superb snow-covered landscapes, tormented tree studies and exquisite still lifes, in which colors burst forth in delicate light. - Weight: 0 g
