Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 - Lot 44
Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 x 9 cm. Intimist autochrome - Flowery interior, circa 1910 This intimist autochrome is fully in line with the intimist painting trend in vogue at the turn of the XXᵉ century, where the focus is on quiet, sensitive interior scenes.
The photograph captures a hallway lined with a neoclassical floral motif, whose muted tones gently envelop the space. At the far end of the composition, a bouquet of hydrangeas introduces a delicate touch of color, subtly breaking the uniformity of the decor and adding a poetic breath to the whole.
The carpet on the floor, extending the floral motifs on the walls, reinforces the impression of immersion in an enclosed world, rich in textures and nuances. The subdued natural light creates a subtle play of chiaroscuro: it partially illuminates the space, gently shaping the forms and lending the scene a hushed, meditative atmosphere.
With its sober composition and delicate chromatics, this autochrome doesn't just depict a place: it invites us to feel the sensitive, warm intimacy of a bourgeois interior at the beginning of the XXᵉ century, while demonstrating how color photography already knew how to dialogue with major contemporary pictorial trends.
Léon Herlant (1873-1968), a man who was both scientist and artist. A doctor of medicine and pharmacology, professor and chairman of the Faculty of Medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1930 onwards, Herlant was the perfect example of the spirit of his time: curious, methodical and sensitive to the beauty of the world.
In addition to his scientific work - including a book co-written with G. Billen in 1896, Micrographie des poudres officinales - Léon Herlant was a passionate Autochrome photographer. His photographs reveal an intimate view of nature and everyday objects.
His works include superb snow-covered landscapes, tormented studies of trees, and still lifes of great finesse, where colors burst forth in delicate light.
