Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 8. - Lot 46
Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 8.5 x 10 cm. Autochrome of a sunset or sunrise, circa 1910 This autochrome captures a fleeting moment of transformation, when light and shadow struggle to take shape. Here, the sunset or sunrise is magnificently fragmented by a towering cliff and dark clouds that cut the scene in two. The horizon, partially obscured by the cloud masses, becomes a veritable territory of contrasts, creating an abstract composition where colors and shapes seem to dissolve in the encounter between golden light and deep shadow. The warm hues of the sky, bathed in the last rays of the day, clash with the coldness of the dark clouds, bringing a palpable visual tension to the image. The contrast between the soft light of the sun and the threatening shadows of the clouds reinforces the impression of a frozen scene, suspended in time. This natural abstraction, born of the encounter between wild nature and the photographic lens, offers a timeless moment, where we feel not only the imminence of change, but also the fragile beauty of the moment captured. Autochrome, with its richness of color, manages to capture this atmosphere, where the sky becomes almost a tableau vivant, where abstraction is born of nature itself, and where every color and shadow seems to dialogue. Léon Herlant (1873-1968), a man who was both scientist and artist. A doctor of medicine and pharmacology, professor and chairman of the Faculty of Medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1930 onwards, Herlant was the perfect example of the spirit of his time: curious, methodical and sensitive to the beauty of the world. In addition to his scientific work - including a book co-written with G. Billen in 1896, Micrographie des poudres officinales - Léon Herlant was a passionate Autochrome photographer. His photographs reveal an intimate view of nature and everyday objects. His works include superb snow-covered landscapes, tormented studies of trees, and still lifes of great finesse, where colors burst forth in delicate light. Weight: 0 g
