Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - Portraits of Céline Thirifays - M - Lot 62
Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - Portraits of Céline Thirifays - Mystery and beauty in light and shadow. 10 x 6 cm each. These three photographs on albumen paper, taken around 1890, are part of the pictorialist movement in Belgian photography, which aimed to make photography an art form in its own right, emphasizing expression, poetry and emotion rather than mere realistic reproduction. These portraits of Céline Thirifays, wife and model of Léon Herlant, perfectly illustrate this artistic and sensitive spirit. The first photograph, a close-up of the three-quarter face, reveals a piercing, almost hypnotic gaze. The intensity of expression in this image seems to go beyond simple portraiture, inviting us to plunge into the model's soul. The play of light and shadow on her face accentuates the pictorialist aspect of the photo, where the subject's sensitivity is brought to the fore. In the second image, Céline's face, seen from the front, reveals a gentle gaze and a serene expression. She is dressed in a period dress and elegant hat, reinforcing the image's romantic, timeless quality. This gentle, calm portrait demonstrates Léon Herlant's mastery of capturing the intimacy and natural beauty of his model, while respecting Pictorialist principles of luminism and atmosphere. Finally, the third photograph, in which subtle chiaroscuro envelops Céline's face, plays on light and shadow to create a mysterious, emotional atmosphere. This play of light and shadow, typical of pictorialism, goes beyond simple portraiture to convey an emotional truth and visual intensity that make this portrait deeply captivating. These three portraits, produced in a pictorialist style, testify to the evolution of photography towards an artistic approach, where each image becomes a work of art in itself, at the crossroads of documentary photography and personal expression. Léon Herlant (1873-1968), a man who was both scientist and artist. A doctor of medicine and pharmacology, professor and chairman of the Faculty of Medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1930 onwards, Herlant was a perfect example of the spirit of his time: curious, methodical and sensitive to the beauty of the world. In addition to his scientific work - including a book co-written with G. Billen in 1896, Micrographie des poudres officinales - Léon Herlant was a passionate Autochrome photographer. His photographs reveal an intimate view of nature and everyday objects. His works include superb snow-covered landscapes, tormented studies of trees, and still lifes of great finesse, where colors burst forth in delicate light. Weight: 0 g
