Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 7 autochromes on Lumière plate, 8 - Lot 66
Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 7 autochromes on Lumière plate, 8.5 x 10 cm. This exceptional set of 7 autochromes brings together a striking floral diversity, where beds of begonias, clematis and other floral species come to life under the artistic eye of the autochrome. Each photograph is a true exploration of nature, a suspended moment where flowers are revealed in all their colorful splendor, but also in all their organic complexity. The begonias, with their vivid hues ranging from brilliant red to soft pink, seem almost to vibrate under the soft light of the autochrome, while the clematis, with their elongated, graceful petals, captivate us with their soft texture and play of light, offering us a fascinating spectacle of color and form. Each photo seems to invite us to explore a secret garden, where the flowers, shot from particular angles and with distinct plays of light, reveal their beauty in a singular way. By rendering infinite nuances of color, autochrome captures the subtle details, light and shadow that magnify each flowerbed. The images, at once romantic and contemporary, depict the intensity of the flora while immersing us in the spirit of the times. The soft tones of the begonias and the delicate shapes of the clematis create a visual harmony that testifies to the genius of autochrome, a revolutionary process that captured emotionally rich, visually arresting images. Some signed and dated between 1908 and 1909. Léon Herlant (1873-1968), a man who was both scientist and artist. A doctor of medicine and pharmacology, professor and chairman of the Faculty of Medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1930 onwards, Herlant was the perfect example of the spirit of his time: curious, methodical and sensitive to the beauty of the world. In addition to his scientific work - including a book co-written with G. Billen in 1896, Micrographie des poudres officinales - Léon Herlant was a passionate Autochrome photographer. His photographs reveal an intimate view of nature and everyday objects. His works include superb snow-covered landscapes, tormented studies of trees, and still lifes of great finesse, where colors burst forth in delicate light. Weight: 0 g
