Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 - Lot 67
Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 x 9 cm. This autochrome of an autumn undergrowth plunges us into a hushed, vibrant atmosphere, where the forest gloom is pierced by delicate rays of sunlight caressing a carpet of orange leaves. Probably taken in the Bois de la Cambre, near Léon Herlant's home in Boitsfort, this shot reveals the photographer's sensitivity to natural light and the poetry of familiar landscapes. The autochrome technique, subtly mastered here, captures the richness of autumn's warm tones, playing with the contrasts between the shadows of the trees and the golden glints filtering through the foliage. The image exudes a meditative, almost painterly quietude, where every leaf seems bathed in light, as if frozen in a suspended moment. The undergrowth becomes an intimate space, at once real and impressionistic, reflecting Léon Herlant's attention to natural landscapes close to his everyday life, but sublimated by the photographer's eye. The autochrome lends this scene a vibrant depth and texture, making this image much more than a simple document: a truly poetic work of light. Léon Herlant (1873-1968), a man who was both scientist and artist. A doctor of medicine and pharmacology, professor and chairman of the Faculty of Medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1930 onwards, Herlant was a perfect example of the spirit of his time: curious, methodical and sensitive to the beauty of the world. In addition to his scientific work - including a book co-written with G. Billen in 1896, Micrographie des poudres officinales - Léon Herlant was a passionate Autochrome photographer. His photographs reveal an intimate view of nature and everyday objects. His works include superb snow-covered landscapes, tormented studies of trees, and still lifes of great finesse, where colors burst forth in delicate light. Weight: 0 g
