Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 - Lot 68
Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 x 9 cm. In this autumnal view of the Bois de la Cambre, the autochrome captures a group of young trees with flamboyant foliage, tinted a luminous orange characteristic of the season. The image, bathed in soft, diffused light, evokes the freshness of young vegetation, contrasting with the darker atmosphere of the surrounding undergrowth. The trees, still fine and slender, stand gracefully and lightly, like flames of vegetation animating the scene. Léon Herlant, true to his naturalist and sensitive eye, composes here an image that combines scientific observation and aesthetic emotion. The autochrome technique faithfully reproduces the warm nuances of the foliage, accentuated by the play of soft shadows and low-angled light that pierces the canopy. This photograph offers a luminous counterpoint to the half-light of the neighboring undergrowth, capturing a suspended moment between nature, color and light, just a stone's throw from the author's home in Boitsfort. Léon Herlant (1873-1968), a man who was both scientist and artist. A doctor of medicine and pharmacology, professor and chairman of the Faculty of Medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1930 onwards, Herlant was the perfect example of the spirit of his time: curious, methodical and sensitive to the beauty of the world. In addition to his scientific work - including a book co-written with G. Billen in 1896, Micrographie des poudres officinales - Léon Herlant was a passionate Autochrome photographer. His photographs reveal an intimate view of nature and everyday objects. His works include superb snow-covered landscapes, tormented studies of trees, and still lifes of great finesse, where colors burst forth in delicate light. Weight: 0 g
