Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 - Lot 73
Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 x 9 cm. This elegant minimalist composition, produced around 1910, strikes a subtle balance between spirituality, aesthetics and object culture. At the center is a standing Amida Buddha, carved in gilded wood, an emblematic figure of Edo period Japanese Buddhism, conveying inner peace and wisdom. The Buddha rests on sumptuous, richly textured red Chinese silk, whose vibrant sheen contrasts with the midnight-blue silk background, also of Chinese origin. This strong chromatic contrast - sacred red and deep blue - sets the scene in a contemplative and sacred dimension. Around the central figure, a number of carefully chosen Chinese porcelains of the green family frame the scene like silent guardians, reinforcing the ritualistic, codified aspect of the composition. The overall effect is a picture of great sobriety, influenced by both Japonism and a highly personal vision of the domestic sacred. This rare autochrome illustrates Léon Herlant's ability to transcend the genre of the still life, turning it into a refined, poetic and profoundly modern visual experience. Léon Herlant (1873-1968) was both a scientist and an artist. A doctor of medicine and pharmacology, professor and chairman of the Faculty of Medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1930 onwards, Herlant was the perfect example of the spirit of his time: curious, methodical and sensitive to the beauty of the world. In addition to his scientific work - including a book co-written with G. Billen in 1896, Micrographie des poudres officinales - Léon Herlant was a passionate Autochrome photographer. His photographs reveal an intimate view of nature and everyday objects. His works include superb snow-covered landscapes, tormented studies of trees, and still lifes of great finesse, where colors burst forth in delicate light. Weight: 0 g
