Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 - Lot 78
Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 x 9 cm. This autochrome, imbued with an intimate atmosphere, plunges the viewer into the intimacy of a space where soft light delicately caresses each object. The subtly lit image reveals Chinese vases, almost discreetly placed on a table or cabinet. These refined pieces, which almost seem to melt into the décor, add an exotic, elegant note to the whole, while remaining in the background, like silent witnesses to everyday life.
The play of chiaroscuro used here amplifies this intimate reflection, playing on light shadows and soft lighting, and highlights the richness of the textures. The Chinese vases, with their pure forms and subtle motifs, almost seem to belong to another era, like a distant memory that time has not altered. The dark, soothing background accentuates their discreet presence, and every detail seems to melt into an atmosphere of silent contemplation.
The image is part of a pictorialist approach typical of the intimist movement, where every object, every reflection, every nuance of color seems invited to tell a personal, almost secret story. The result is a poetic, hushed depiction of domestic space, where each element seems to capture a moment suspended in time, at once intimate and universal. By Léon Herlant (1873-1968), a man who was both a scientist and an artist. A doctor of medicine and pharmacology, professor and chairman of the Faculty of Medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1930 onwards, Herlant was the perfect example of the spirit of his time: curious, methodical and sensitive to the beauty of the world.
In addition to his scientific work - including a book co-written with G. Billen in 1896, Micrographie des poudres officinales - Léon Herlant was a passionate Autochrome photographer. His photographs reveal an intimate view of nature and everyday objects.
His works include superb snow-covered landscapes, tormented studies of trees, and still lifes of great finesse, where colors burst forth in delicate light.
