Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 - Lot 79
Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 x 9 cm. This autochrome captures the essence of an intimate interior, where the richness of the carpets on the floor creates a feeling of warmth and comfort. The play of chiaroscuro envelops the scene with a particular softness, as each rug spread out on the floor seems to tell a story through its patterns and textures. Some carpets, in deep colors, unfurl like works of art on the floor, their intricate patterns and subtle nuances bringing a unique character to the space. Carpets are not simply decorative elements, but vectors of emotion, integrated into the hushed, silent atmosphere of the space. They delineate spaces, provide visual anchors and accentuate the impression of depth and cohesion in the interior space. Soft lighting highlights the textile fibers, which seem to vibrate under the light, and plays on textures to create a sense of quiet movement. As in other works of the Intimist pictorialist movement, the image is an invitation to silent contemplation, where every detail, every motif, seems to carry a part of the story of this interior. This play with light and shadow around the carpets amplifies the idea that the space photographed is a living place, full of memories and suspended moments. Signed Léon Herlant (1873-1968), a man who was both a scientist and an artist. A doctor of medicine and pharmacology, professor and chairman of the Faculty of Medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1930 onwards, Herlant was the perfect example of the spirit of his time: curious, methodical and sensitive to the beauty of the world. In addition to his scientific work - including a book co-written with G. Billen in 1896, Micrographie des poudres officinales - Léon Herlant was a passionate Autochrome photographer. His photographs reveal an intimate view of nature and everyday objects. His works include superb snow-covered landscapes, tormented studies of trees, and still lifes of great finesse, where colors burst forth in delicate light. Weight: 0 g
