Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 - Lot 80
Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 x 9 cm. In this resolutely intimate autochrome, the space seems ready to reveal a secret scene. The elegant drapes on either side of the composition frame the scene like theater curtains, suggesting that an imminent act is about to unfold. Soft light filters through the fabrics, creating shadows and highlights that add depth and subtle tension to the scene.
The whole composition seems suspended in time, almost palpable. The spectator can imagine the three strokes of a baton echoing through the air, as in a Molière play, announcing the beginning of the play. The drapes, enclosing the stage, create a sensation of expectation, reinforced by the intensity of the colors and textures that unfold around the space.
The atmosphere is hushed, but the play of chiaroscuro lends a sense of dramatic intensity to the interior, as if every detail had a role to play. The drapes on either side, heavy and richly colored, form a protective frame for a space that is meant to be private, like a theater stage ready to welcome the actors, emotions and intrigues of an inner universe about to be revealed.
This image is perfectly in keeping with the spirit of the pictorialism of the intimists, where everyday life becomes a stage in its own right, a delicate mise-en-scène where the intimacy of every object, every nook and cranny, seems to be waiting to be revealed. Dated 1914, located Watermael and signed
Léon Herlant (1873-1968), a man who was both a scientist and an artist. A doctor of medicine and pharmacology, professor and chairman of the Faculty of Medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1930 onwards, Herlant was the perfect example of the spirit of his time: curious, methodical and sensitive to the beauty of the world.
In addition to his scientific work - including a book co-written with G. Billen in 1896, Micrographie des poudres officinales - Léon Herlant was a passionate Autochrome photographer. His photographs reveal an intimate view of nature and everyday objects.
His works include superb snow-covered landscapes, tormented studies of trees, and still lifes of great finesse, where colors burst forth in delicate light.
