Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 - Lot 81
Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 x 9 cm. This autochrome plunges the viewer into the intimacy of an elegant Flemish interior, where order and harmony reign. The rich, warm red walls host meticulously arranged blue and white Delft earthenware. Six carefully aligned vases add a note of freshness, while decorative plates adorn the walls, creating an ambience both refined and welcoming. The play of light accentuates the softness of the space, and each object seems carefully positioned to bring out its unique character in this subtle arrangement.
At the center of the room, an imposing bronze chandelier, typical of the high period, sits majestically. Its metallic lustre contrasts with the soft red and blue tones of the surroundings, adding a touch of grandeur and elegance. The chandelier, with its glittering pendants, becomes almost a focal point around which all the other elements of the room revolve.
The whole scene exudes a sense of comfort and calm, reinforced by the intensity of the colors and the careful arrangement of the objects. The subtly filtered light creates a play of chiaroscuro that highlights the textures of the materials - from earthenware to bronzes to woodwork - while underlining the beauty of each detail.
This image embodies the spirit of intimate pictorialism, where each element seems to tell a discreet story. The space, though tidy and orderly, seems imbued with the history and memory of those who lived there, and every object, every color, contributes to the creation of a private and precious atmosphere, suspended in time.
Léon Herlant (1873-1968), a man who was both a scientist and an artist. A doctor of medicine and pharmacology, professor and chairman of the Faculty of Medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1930 onwards, Herlant was a perfect example of the spirit of his time: curious, methodical and sensitive to the beauty of the world.
In addition to his scientific work - including a book co-written with G. Billen in 1896, Micrographie des poudres officinales - Léon Herlant was a passionate Autochrome photographer. His photographs reveal an intimate view of nature and everyday objects.
His works include superb snow-covered landscapes, tormented studies of trees, and still lifes of great finesse, where colors burst forth in delicate light.
