Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 - Lot 83
Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 12 x 9 cm. In this autochrome, the atmosphere is bathed in a soft, warm light, characteristic of a refined neo-classical interior. The yellow walls, warm and luminous, give the room a feeling of conviviality while retaining a certain sober elegance. The central mirror, suspended over the fireplace, becomes the focal point of the space. Its large size and frame, adorned with simple, elegant motifs typical of neo-classical aesthetics, visually enlarge the room, while amplifying the play of light diffused throughout the space. Neo-classical furniture, characterized by its clean lines and refined details, stands out in this light, its light wood and gilded motifs adding a touch of lightness and prestige. The shapes are simple yet full of character, and each element seems carefully arranged to enhance the whole. The contrast between the soft luminosity of the yellow walls and the dark depth of the mirror creates a subtle play of light and shadow, contributing to the impression of volume and grandeur, while maintaining the intimacy of the scene. The carefully placed mirror not only reflects the room, but also plays on the perception of space, doubling the visible elements and adding depth to the composition. It magnifies the furniture all around, accentuating the beauty of classic lines and decorations that are both modern and timeless. This subtle balance between light and reflection gives the interior an open, airy character, while preserving an atmosphere of elegant intimacy. The whole scene embodies the tranquility and harmony of the neo-classical interior, where every object, every piece of furniture and every shade of color contributes to an intimate visual experience, bathed in a soft light that invites contemplation. Léon Herlant (1873-1968), a man who was both a scientist and an artist. A doctor of medicine and pharmacology, professor and chairman of the Faculty of Medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1930 onwards, Herlant was the perfect example of the spirit of his time: curious, methodical and sensitive to the beauty of the world. In addition to his scientific work - including a book co-written with G. Billen in 1896, Micrographie des poudres officinales - Léon Herlant was a passionate Autochrome photographer. His photographs reveal an intimate view of nature and everyday objects. His works include superb snow-covered landscapes, tormented studies of trees, and still lifes of great finesse, where colors burst forth in delicate light. Weight: 0 g
