Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 8. - Lot 88
Léon Herlant (1873-1968) - 1 autochrome on Lumière plate, 8.5 x 10 cm. This view of an Entre-deux commode from the Louis XV period, adorned with diamond marquetry, presents a perfect blend of elegance and refinement. The delicately carved chest of drawers is distinguished by its precious wood ornamentation, where diamond marquetry creates subtle, sophisticated geometric patterns. The lustrous finish of the wood highlights the beauty and richness of the craftsmanship, embodying the exquisite taste of the Louis XV period, with a touch of lightness typical of that period.
At the top of the commode, delicate Chinese porcelain crowns the piece. Porcelain vases and objects, in traditional blue and white hues, add an exotic touch to this classic interior. Their placement on the commode is not only decorative, but creates a cultural fusion between 18th-century Europe and Asia, reflecting the growing appeal of Chinese objects, which were highly prized at the time. The refined details of the porcelain complete the ensemble, adding a luxurious and unique dimension to the composition.
The balance between fine marquetry and Chinese porcelain on this Entre-deux commode creates a visual harmony, where each element seems to have been meticulously chosen to express the fusion of styles and timeless elegance. At once timeless and refined, this piece embodies the quintessence of Rococo taste while opening up to exotic Asian influences, creating a fascinating dialogue between cultures and eras. Dated 1914, located in Watermael and signed.
Léon Herlant (1873-1968), a man who was both a scientist and an artist. A doctor of medicine and pharmacology, professor and chairman of the Faculty of Medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1930 onwards, Herlant was the perfect example of the spirit of his time: curious, methodical and sensitive to the beauty of the world.
In addition to his scientific work - including a book co-written with G. Billen in 1896, Micrographie des poudres officinales - Léon Herlant was a passionate Autochrome photographer. His photographs reveal an intimate view of nature and everyday objects.
His works include superb snow-covered landscapes, tormented studies of trees, and still lifes of great finesse, where colors burst forth in delicate light.
