TIBET, 19th CENTURY Gilded bronze figure of Vajravārāhī The - Lot 77
TIBET, 19th CENTURY Gilded bronze figure of Vajravārāhī The female deity is depicted dancing in alidha posture on a lotiform plinth, right leg raised, left bent, crushing a figure beneath her feet. She holds a vajra in her right hand and a kapala (skull bowl) in her left. A sow's head emerges from her hair, characteristic of Vajravārāhī, the wrathful form of Vajrayoginī. She is richly adorned with jewelry, garlands of severed heads and tantric ritual ornaments. The face expresses the strength and ferocity of transcendent wisdom. A central figure in Vajrayāna practices, Vajravārāhī embodies the active feminine energy of ultimate realization and the transformation of the passions.
