TIBET, 19th CENTURY Gilded bronze figure of Palden Lhamo The - Lot 78
TIBET, 19th CENTURY Gilded bronze figure of Palden Lhamo The goddess is shown seated in an energetic stance on a mule. In her right hand, she holds a raised sword, and in her left, a cranial cup (kapala). She has several arms and is adorned with necklaces of severed heads, snakes and tantric garlands. She wears a headdress of skulls and a wrathful expression with bulging eyes. Palden Lhamo (Shri Devi in Sanskrit), Tibet's tutelary deity and protector of the Dalai Lama, embodies the terrifying force of active wisdom. She symbolically crosses the blood ocean of passions on her mount, and is surrounded by rich symbolism linked to exorcism and the preservation of cosmic order.
