CHINA, 19th CENTURY Gilded bronze and polychrome figure of Yama Yama, the god of death, is represented in a dynamic posture (alidha), brandishing a bony scepter (khatvanga) above his head, his left hand raised in a gesture of exorcism. His three-eyed, grimacing face is topped by a headdress with red flames and five skulls. He is dressed in skins, adorned with head necklaces, snakes and jewels, and strides on an elongated buffalo, his characteristic mount. This figure is part of the Tibetan iconographic tradition, but was produced in China for the Tibetan or Mongolian Buddhist communities of the Qing court.
