Maternity statue, Lunda-Chokwe, southeastern DRC / northern - Lot 27
Maternity statue, Lunda-Chokwe, southeastern DRC / northern Angola border area. Carved wood, beautiful old brown patina with traces of ritual use, grooved helmet-like headdress with crest, diamond and chevron-shaped scarification marks, the child actively grasping its mother's breast. This statue is a remarkable example of a frontier art between the Lunda, Chokwe and Luena traditions, combining naturalism and symbolic stylization. Its expressive power, the quality of its patina and its rare theme make it a first-rate piece. H: 46 cm - circa 1900-1930. Collected on site by A.S., St Idesbald, early 1950s Weight: 1600 g Weight: 0 g
