Fang Mabea (Byeri) ancestor figure, South Cameroon (Kribi, A - Lot 75

Fang Mabea (Byeri) ancestor figure, South Cameroon (Kribi, Akom II, Bipindi areas). Semi-sitting posture, both hands clasped, holding a libation horn, a symbol of offering to the ancestors. The coiffure is finely striated, typical of the Fang-Mabea style. A vertical back support stabilizes the posture. A forehead scarification is visible between the eyebrows, the eyelids are represented by upholsterer's nails, and the teeth are finely sculpted. These elements indicate a very high level of detail and technical mastery. The most probable wood species is Alstonia boonei (white cheese tree) or Ceiba pentandra (classic African cheese tree), traditionally used by the Fang-Mabea for statuary. The patina is ancient and ritualistic, especially on the headdress and hands. H : 64 cm. Ex private collection Brussels Weight: 2000 g Weight: 0 g
