Remarkable Regency Louis XV-style carved oak armoire-horloge in Liège, richly decorated with scrolls, shells, acanthus leaves and rocaille clasps.
The upper part, glazed on three sides, is surmounted by a moving pediment with a virtuoso openwork decoration of scrolls and foliage.
In the center, a clock movement signed "Hubert Sarton", watchmaker to the Prince Evèque (S.A.C.) in Liège". Gilded and silvered brass dial engraved with scrolls, featuring hours in Roman numerals, monthly calendar (1-31), small central seconds and moon-phase indication on blue starry enamel disc. Openwork blued steel hands, cartouche engraved with Sarton's signature.
This piece is a rare example of Liège cabinet-making in the XVIIIᵉ century, combining the tradition of ceremonial furniture with the watchmaking precision typical of the Liège workshops, renowned throughout Europe for the quality of their mechanisms.
It has been the subject of several exhibitions in Liège and was presented at the Musée du Louvre in Paris, in the exhibition Meubles anciens du pays de Liège, under catalog number 399 (from 15/05 to 15/06 1924 ).
The showcase rests on a base with four doors and three drawers adorned with delicately carved rocaille motifs; the proportions are harmonious, the oak has a beautiful golden-brown patina, and the ironwork is original.
