China - Rare deep blue monochrome porcelain meiping vase, st - Lot 14
China - Rare deep blue monochrome porcelain meiping vase, standing on a pedestal, six-character mark in blue underglaze of the Yongzheng emperor, Qing dynasty (XVIIIᵉ century)
A meiping-shaped vase, with an elegantly curved body flaring from a narrow foot to full shoulders, topped by a short neck with a slightly flared lip. The whole is covered with a deep blue monochrome glaze, saturated and luminous in tone, reminiscent of the so-called "sacrificial blue" (ji lan), with fine streaks and firing nuances in places, characteristic of high-temperature monochromes.
The base, left in bisque, is centered by an underglaze blue enamelled medallion bearing a six-character mark on two columns, attributable to Emperor Yongzheng, inscribed within a double circle. The fineness of the paste, the purity of the glaze, the mastery of form and the calligraphic quality of the mark suggest a very high-level production, probably intended for court or scholarly use.
This type of meiping vase with strictly monochrome blue decoration is particularly rare in the Yongzheng reign, a period more associated with the refinement of polychrome enamels and light monochromes.
