Exceptional set of totems, sculptures and architectural comp - Lot 86
Exceptional set of totems, sculptures and architectural compositions in painted wood, Belgian modernist work from the 1920s-1930s, Antwerp school.
This rare set includes 11 pieces, created in a resolutely geometric and avant-garde spirit, most of them retaining their original colors:
- A box with its lid, with an orthogonal geometric composition, punctuated by bright red (original colors).
- An architectural totem composed of several yellow-painted trays, held in place by a black-painted pole (original colors).
- A pair of wooden bookends, each formed by two squares joined at an edge to create a right angle, enclosing a wooden circle (original colors).
- A pair of wooden bookends with a chaotic geometric composition.
- A Dadaist wooden sculpture topped by a spring, bearing an old handwritten label:
"Louis Maeger - Atelier de sculpture, 1932-1933".
- A basket composed of five wooden planks painted red and black (the original colors), with three circles, evoking the compositions of Victor Servranckx; the whole, now fragile, was originally assembled without nails.
- A wall sculpture in stained wood, with a geometric composition, attributable to Karel Maes.
- A four-tray totem pole, painted white, previously repainted.
- A singular geometric sculpture composed of two green horseshoe arches, nested in a red cube, resting on a cattail on a square-section base (original colors).
An extremely rare set, providing a remarkable illustration of the plastic and architectural research of Belgian modernism in the 1920s-1930s.
