Lukwakongo Lega mask. DR Congo. Bone, plant fibers and ligat - Lot 132
Lukwakongo Lega mask. DR Congo. Bone, plant fibers and ligature elements.
Small facial mask carved from polished bone, presenting an elongated face with pure features: half-closed almond-shaped eyes, straight, narrow nose, perforated mouth. The surface has an ancient, matte, shaded patina, the result of ritual handling. Old fibers and ligatures are present at the base, attesting to ceremonial use. This type of mask was used as part of the initiation rituals of the Bwami, the Lega society of wisdom and moral hierarchy. Collected on site in early 1950. Collection A.S. Saint Idesbald. Early 20th c.
