Hemba female head. DR Congo. - Lot 248
Hemba female head. DR Congo. Wood with dark glossy patina. Sculpted head featuring the classic stylistic canons of Hemba art: elongated oval face, rounded forehead, rectilinear nasal bridge, incised half-closed eyelids, small, closed mouth. The elaborate hairstyle, with its large back volumes held in place by a sculpted headband with geometric decoration, elegantly frames the face. A stylized, finely incised beard highlights the chin. Beautiful old patina, polished by ritual handling, with consistent areas of wear. Probably derived from an ancestor figure (singiti). Condition : Good Height : 42 cm Width : 40 cm Weight : 7 kilos 620 grs
