Legler was born in Switzerland and grew up in Italy. He studied architecture in Zurich. In the early 1950s, Legler studied in the United States and specialized in industrial design. First in Boston and then in Chicago, then the center of industrial design. He later ran his own design studio there. In 1961, he returned to Zurich, where he continued his work as a designer until 2007.
